Advise & Consult Columnist Was a Navy Pilot in Vietnam

By Eugene Peterson

A native Californian, Eugene Peterson graduated from Sacramento State College in 1969 with a B.S. in Business Administration. After college, he joined the Navy and became a pilot. Tours of duty took him to the four corners of the w o r l d ,  including Vietnam. Thanks to the Navy, he has had the opportunity to travel and see the world (he retired from the Navy Reserve with the rank of Commander). He built his first home in 1974, and is proud to have been a general contractor, home builder and restoration contractor for more than 31 years. In 1977, he obtained a master’s of science degree from Iowa State University. He also taught at Iowa State University for three years.  In 1997, Peterson started a small construction consulting practice, which rapidly grew. His focus was on business principles and practices. In the beginning years, most people who sought his services were gifted craftsmen who lacked business skills to stay in business. Peterson’s consulting practice grew initially by word of mouth.  He soon was sought after and much in demand as a national and international construction business consultant. His seminars, lectures, training and coaching have inspired thousands of people to improve their business practices, principles and procedures. He touches lives by helping individuals and companies enhance profitability and build strong and successful companies. Today, the practice also includes companies doing okay, but who need a little nudge for further growth. He is a past president of both the Utah Home Builders Association and the Greater Salt Lake Home Builders Association. He currently is the CEO of Advise and Consult, Inc., a company that provides business consultants to the construction industries, with a practice both in the United States and Canada.
