Space Mountain Closed: Three Disneyland Attractions Closed for OSHA Violations

Three major attractions are currently closed indefinitely at Disneyland due to OSHA violations.Disneyland opened up on Sunday, April 14, 2013, with Soarin’ Over California and Space Mountain closed. The Matterhorn was up and operational, but had been closed on Saturday. Per a report from The Disney Blog, a full timeline dating back to Nov. 2012, details the reasons for the ride closures.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CAL/OSHA) delivered several violation citations to the Disneyland Resort on Saturday for Space Mountain. That resulted in the closing of the three major attractions, but it isn’t clear if Soarin’ and the Matterhorn are related to the same violations.

The issue from back in Nov. of 2012 dealt with a worker from a contracted company that was cleaning the outside of Space Mountain. He got injured in an accident during the cleaning, and that brought in CAL/OSHA for an inspection.

Some of the findings are simple while others could lead to serious fines. It appears as if more inspections are coming in the next few days.

Total penalties for Space Mountain citations alone could reach over $230,000.

Per The Disney Blog, OSHA had inspectors on site on Sunday morning doing inspections as they were still concerned with employee safety. Numerous attractions had violations and were closed temporarily until fixes could be made.

Suzi Brown, Director of Media Relations and External Communications for theDisneyland Resort said, “we have received notification of the citations and are working with OSHA to fully review them.” Relating to the temporary ride closes Brown added, “we constantly strive to maintain a safe work environment for our cast members and contractors — and we are reviewing certain protocols.”

Finding Nemo is still closed due to a small fire on a sub recently and Big Thunder Mountain is down for rehab so Disneyland is currently struggling. Word is that very long lines and a bunch of confusion littered the park on Sunday.
